REST & RESTORATION IN NATURE

It’s been an odd Summer for me. MotherHealth came to a halt as I processed several medical appointments, diagnoses & surgeries. I struggled to let go, take time to rest, and fully focus on my health. I basically found it very challenging to “walk my talk,” which took a knock on my confidence and ability to run my business.

As I surged from the latest surgery, I felt an urge to get out into nature, disconnect fully, ground deeply and reset.

Growing up in Ecuador, wildly exposed to volcanoes, the rainforest, and the tropical coast, taught me how to rely on Mother Nature to feel alive. It’s something I crave constantly, living in London, and the main reason my holiday of choice is camping. So, this time, we drove off to Cornwall.

Coming back from this trip I can confidently say I feel rested & restored, bursting with creativity and wholly ready for new projects. And, while I’m still buzzing with this new energy, I’d love to share with you a little bit about the therapeutic practise that got me back on my feet.

What is Earthing?

Earthing, also known as grounding, is the practise of reconnecting with the Earth’s natural energy to enhance health and well-being. It’s a simple yet profound way to tap into the healing power of nature. Some scientific studies suggest that Earthing can reduce inflammation and pain, improve sleep quality, and balance cortisol levels. The idea is that the Earth’s surface carries a negative electrical charge, which can have a positive impact on the body when we make direct contact with it.

By spending just 10 minutes with bare skin touching the Earth—whether it’s your feet on the grass, your hands on a tree, or even your whole body lying on the ground—you can help neutralise free radicals in your body. These free radicals are associated with inflammation, aging, and disease, so connecting with the Earth can be a powerful step toward better health.

How to Practice Earthing

There are many ways to incorporate Earthing into your daily routine:

  • Walking Barefoot: The simplest and most accessible method. Kick off your shoes and feel the ground beneath your feet, whether it’s grass, sand, or soil.

  • Earthing Mats and Sheets: These products are designed to bring the benefits of Earthing indoors. They can be used while you sleep, work, or relax, allowing you to stay connected with the Earth’s energy even when you’re inside.

  • Earthing Patches: These small patches can be placed on specific areas of your body, targeting where you need healing the most.

Personally, my favourite way to experience the healing power of the Earth is by sipping my morning tea with my bare feet firmly planted on the ground. There’s something incredibly soothing about starting the day this way, even if it’s a bit chilly as we move into the colder months. Building this habit now, while the Earth is still warm from Summer, will make it easier to continue through the winter.

Start Small, Feel the Difference

If Earthing piques your curiosity, I encourage you to start small. Perhaps begin by placing your hands on a tree for a couple of minutes each day, or try feeling the ground under your feet. Notice how you feel afterward—lighter, calmer, more centred. You can gradually increase the time you spend grounding, observing the subtle yet profound changes in your body and mind.

My invitation is to perhaps find a moment to lie on the Earth while listening to a calming Yoga Nidra, allowing yourself a moment of deep restoration, healing, and nourishment.
